Et respondit praedicta vox vultu irato ut apparebat, diceretur: « Satis habuistis tempus et satis habuistis doctores et praedicatores qui vobis intimaverunt et vos docuerunt, et tamen vos non emendatis. » Et adhuc oravit Maria praedicta, dicens: « Domine, si tua voluntas sic, fac ut tota sententia tua cadat super me, et moriar ego sola et vivant omnes alii. »
Et tunc respondit ipse homo existens quasi in medio rotae vultu irato, ut apparebat, dicendo ei: « Quare tu petis rem iniustam? Non concedetur tibi. Quare ego puniam te? Tu non es causa omnium malorum. Dimitte me capere vindicationem populo pleno iniquitatis. Tu ostendisti mihi signum magni amoris et nunc tu vis impedire voluntatem meam esse. »
Et tunc ostendit ei pelves eras plenas stercoribus foetentibus horribiliter, ita quod vix poterat durare sentiendo illum foetorem, dicens: « Ecce odorem quem die ac nocte dat mihi populus iste plenus iniquitate. »
Et tunc oranda praefata Maria dixit: « Domine sancte, pater omnipotens Deus, fiat voluntas tua. Sed quid dicent inimici tui? Quod tu rexisti te sicut unus puerorum qui faciunt pulchras domos de terra ad voluntates suas et postea destruunt eas? Memento, Domine, ad beneplacitum tuum verbum quod dixisti beato Petro. Tu enim promisisti ei quod fides tua non periret. »
Et tunc respondit ei vox existens quasi in medio rotae, dicens: « Bene recordor quid ego dixi beato Petro, et illud attendam et adimplebo ei. Sed sententia mea cadet in eos in quibus fides mortua est. »
Et tunc ense quem tenebat tetigit post ad omnia vulnera sua, et postea percussit pillare et eius tertia pars cecidit. Et tunc una pulchra domina movit se de loco in quo stabat, genibus flexis, cuius genua videbantur cruentata et excoriata et plena sanguine. Quae amplexata est eum, dicendo ei: « Fili, memento amarissimae passionis tuae quam tu es passus cum magna poena et ego cum magno labore et dolore. »
Et tunc existens quasi in medio rotae omnes gladios plicavit circumcirca rotam, et plicatis gladiis cessavit rotae motus qui erat quasi fulgur. Et plicando gladios praefatos dixit tribus angelis et tribus sanctis: « Si non emendaverit se populus iste plenus iniquitate, vos descendetis in terram cum istis gladiis, et suorum inimicorum cuilibet tradetur suus gladius, cum quibus destruant eos tamquam inimicos et adversarios meos. »
Et nihil aliud vidit pro tunc nec audivit dicta Maria quod recitare ei liceat, ut dixit.

In the year of the Lord 1398, on Friday the 26th of April, the aforesaid Mary, about the hour of midday, was seized by two flaming (that is, fiery) spirits and felt such great fear that no one could console her; and she showed signs of this fear to those present—the lady queen of Sicily, her confessor, and many others. And during the fear she saw a wondrous vision, which afterward she recounted to those present. The vision was this:
First she saw a flaming (fiery) wheel with its face turned toward the earth; and on its upper surface there appeared a ground or floor, in which were fixed 3,450 sharp swords on the side that looked toward the earth—of which five were much larger than the others, and three of those much larger than the rest, and of those three one was the largest. In the same wheel there were fixed almost innumerable sharp arrows, more thickly set in the wheel than hairs on a man’s head. And the wheel encircled a certain pillar that seemed to be of stone, one point of which touched the firmament directly beneath the foot of the throne of God; and the wheel was always moving, and from the swiftness of its motion it appeared like lightning. And the distance of the wheel in its descent from the throne of God was as it were a thousand reeds. And in the wheel were thirteen chains fastening to the firmament and to the wheel, which thirteen burning angels held, moving the wheel—each of whom held in his left hand an upraised sword to strike, and in his right each held one of the chains fastening to the firmament and the wheel. And they were heated, as it seemed, to smite the chains, so that they awaited nothing but the command of the One seated upon the throne.
And the One seated upon the throne was, as it were, in the middle of the wheel, in the likeness of a man bloodied and wounded with various wounds, beside the pillar, holding in his hand—which, according to our disposition, would be called the left— a marvelous sword, which was nearly the length of five reeds and of the same width, raised as though he wished to strike. And then the aforesaid Mary prayed to him, saying: “Holy Lord, almighty Father, may it please you, by the merits of your blessed Passion, to have mercy on us, and do not chasten us in your wrath.”
And a mocking voice of one of the angels who held a chain, standing near the One seated as it were in the midst of the wheel, said: “There is no wrath in God.” And then the aforesaid Mary prayed again, saying: “Lord, grant us time and space so that we may amend our life and serve you.” And the aforesaid voice, with an angry countenance as it appeared, replied: “You have had enough time, and you have had enough teachers and preachers who have made it known to you and taught you, and yet you do not amend.”
And still Mary prayed, saying: “Lord, if it be your will, let your whole sentence fall upon me, and let me alone die and all the others live.” And then that Man who was as it were in the midst of the wheel replied with an angry countenance, as it seemed, saying to her: “Why do you ask an unjust thing? It will not be granted to you. Why should I punish you? You are not the cause of all evils. Allow me to take vengeance upon a people full of iniquity. You have shown me the sign of great love, and now you wish to hinder my will from being.” And then he showed her bright basins filled with excrement, horribly stinking, so that she could scarcely endure the smell, saying: “Behold the stench which this people full of iniquity gives me day and night.”
And then the aforesaid Mary, about to pray, said: “Holy Lord, almighty God and Father, your will be done. But what will your enemies say—that you have conducted yourself like one of the little boys who make fair houses of earth for their pleasure and afterward destroy them? Remember, Lord, at your good pleasure the word that you said to blessed Peter. For you promised him that his faith would not perish.” And then a voice, as it were in the midst of the wheel, answered her, saying: “Well do I remember what I said to blessed Peter, and I will attend to it and fulfill it for him. But my sentence shall fall upon those in whom the faith is dead.”
And then with the sword which he held he touched afterward all his wounds; and afterward he struck the pillar, and a third part of it fell. And then a beautiful Lady moved from the place where she stood, kneeling, whose knees seemed bloodied and flayed and full of blood. She embraced him, saying to him: “Son, remember your most bitter Passion which you suffered with great pain, and I with great toil and sorrow.” And then the One as it were in the midst of the wheel folded all the swords around the wheel; and when the swords were folded, the motion of the wheel—which had been like lightning—ceased. And as he folded those swords he said to three angels and three saints: “If this people full of iniquity does not amend itself, you shall descend to earth with these swords, and to each of their enemies his own sword shall be delivered, with which they shall destroy them as my enemies and adversaries.”
And Mary said that for the time being she saw and heard nothing else which it is permitted her to recount.

Et tunc dedit licentiam Marie, dicendo ei : « Vade et dic ecclesiis, et qui habebit aures audiendi audiat, et qui spiritum intelligendi capiat, et lauda nomen meum coram hominibus, et non timeas eos qui possunt ibi facere malum homini, sed eum time qui potest occidere corpus et animam et ponere in gehennam inferni. »

On the following day, after receiving the body of the Lord, at about the ninth hour, in the presence of the aforesaid named persons and many others, the said Maria was carried off by spirits similar to those above. And it seemed to her that they bore her into darkness. And first she saw the places in hell, those over whom the divine sentence will fall, where they will be punished more or less according to the measure of their sins. And she was led there by the said two angelic spirits who then left her there.
And then three demons seized her and led her before Lucifer, prince of darkness, bound with a certain chain. He held her fast and kindled before her a dreadful fire, and had burning wheels brought near in which he wished to torment her. He gave her the choice of one of two things: either that she would swear never again to speak of the divine right of the Church, nor tell anyone of the things she had seen, but rather to say something else, and to deny the One she had received that day; “or else you must remain forever in these prepared torments. But if you will consent to any of these things, you will be rewarded and may do whatever you wish, and you will have the friendship of all your enemies.” Then the said Maria answered him, saying: “Of all these things you ask of me, I will do none. But if it pleases my Creator, I will remain here: let His will be done.” And then Lucifer said to her: “You have hindered me for a long time, but now you will not escape my hands.” And he bound her with a chain upon a burning wheel which was surrounded with fire, while demons without number rejoiced greatly and prepared to torment her. Then Lucifer bound her on the wheel and turned it three times. Then she began to cry aloud, saying: “Lord God, have mercy on me.” And immediately one of those spirits who had led her there came with a drawn sword, and struck the chain by which she was bound to the wheel, and freed her from those torments.
Afterwards she was led before the throne of God, and saw the justice and judgment upon those upon whom the foretold swords would fall; and they were set apart from the divine perfection. She saw Him seated on the throne, who showed her His justice and judgment, saying: “I will separate the wicked from My perfection and from that which I have given to My beloved, which is always with Me.” And He showed her, as it were, a city surrounded with very high and thick walls, in which was contained the whole of Christendom. And outside the city, all around, was a multitude of unbelievers almost without number, who strove to break the walls of the city in four places, as if they would make four gates; and already they had nearly made one gate. And He, seated on the throne, divided Christendom into four parts. And He separated three parts from the fourth. And the fourth part He united to His children in diverse ways according to different perfections, freely bestowing these upon them.
And then He said: “Go, ye cursed of My Father, into the hells which have been prepared for you from the foundation of this world, where you shall endure horrible torments and the gnashing of teeth.” Again He told the aforesaid Maria that those cursed ones in this world would die in many ways: some by fire, some in water, others by iron swords, others by sudden death, others in various other manners, “of which at this time I make no mention to you. And unless, for this reason, all turn to Me, this people full of iniquity, I will allow five lightning bolts to fall upon them, and all ships that are upon the sea outside harbors will perish, and likewise all those in those four places will perish, from which such a stench will arise that no one will be able to dwell upon the earth for seven years. And they will withdraw into remote places and live with great sorrows upon the earth, and in all these tribulations they will be pitied.”
And then He gave permission to Maria, saying to her: “Go and tell the churches, and let whoever has ears to hear, hear, and whoever has a spirit to understand, understand. And praise My name before men, and do not fear those who can do evil to a man, but rather fear Him who can kill both body and soul and cast them into the fires of hell.”

Again in spirit I saw the church of God, and there were four towers. One was greater and more eminent than the others, its summit reaching up to the clouds; the other three were very low and small, and so arranged around the church that they seemed to support that great one. But behold, suddenly that great tower fell and was shattered down to the foundation, so that it could no longer be raised up. And then those three small ones were suddenly lifted up, and became great and very strong, and they covered and supported the whole church. And I heard a voice saying: “The Church of God will be transferred from one place to another, and the humble will be exalted and the great will be cast down. And there shall be a translation of the Apostolic See, and it will be wondrous in the eyes of men.”

Then, on the sixth day of the aforesaid month, on the feast of the Lord’s Eucharist, while Mass was being celebrated, Mary, being in her oratory quite near the altar, was seized by two flaming or fiery spirits who carried her before the throne of God. And there she saw divine processions and heavenly multitudes proceeding in wondrous order, for they circled around the throne of God. She saw first a number of cherubim and seraphim preceding all the rest, having five censers each, with which they censed; from these there came forth such a great and fragrant odor that it could hardly be expressed in human words.
Then after them followed blessed Peter, bearing the Lord in his hands in the likeness of a man of about thirty-three years; and with him immediately came the other apostles in their order. After these followed the virgin martyrs, wondrously adorned; for they carried seven crowns, as it seemed to her, and all seven appeared as one upon each of their heads. And all, with the others, circled the throne of God five times, singing a kind of new song. This song Mary did not understand, except when they said: “Glory be to the Father and to the Son, etc.” And this they said when they were before the holy and undivided Trinity, laying down one of the crowns at each turn, and bowing their heads—not the virgins alone, but all others as well, down even to the feet of the Lord—adoring the holy and undivided Trinity.
And to the glorious Virgin Mary, Mother of God, who sat as it were at the foot of the throne of God, they bowed their heads exactly. And at the fifth circuit they reassumed their crowns and the ears of wheat they had laid down. Then followed the martyrs in order; then the confessors; then the patriarchs and prophets; then followed a great multitude of virgin widows and confessors.
When this procession was ended, she, most reverent, having been left by those who had brought her there, saw herself as it were in their midst. And she saw an empty seat between Saint Paul and blessed Catherine, which in her heart she desired might be transferred to her and that she might sit therein. Then Jesus Christ spoke to her, saying: “Do you love God?” She replied: “Yes, but not as much as I ought.” Again he asked: “What good would you do for him?” She answered: “His will, according to my ability.” He said: “What hinders you, Mary?” She said: “Nothing.” Then Jesus said: “Bring out the sinner.” She answered: “I cannot.” He said: “Look upon me.” She said: “You know well what you made me.” Then Jesus said: “Mary, will you die for your God?” She answered: “Yes, if it pleases me.” Jesus said to her: “You contradict yourself, for you offer death but are weighed down by the words of men.”
Then he showed her a garland of roses of various colors, and said: “As much as you approach this garland, it will approach you; and as much as you withdraw from it, it will withdraw from you. And now you shall suffer for me as I suffered for you. Hope, therefore, and endure for love of me injuries, spitting, reproaches, and the like.” And then Jesus said to Mary: “I will show you my Passion.” And he showed her his Passion and declared it to her. And again he asked her, saying: “Have you drunk today or eaten?” She replied: “You know well that I have not.” And he said again: “Do you believe that I can show you visions before your meal and after your meal?” She answered: “You know well that I have never doubted.” And Jesus said to her: “Often indeed, if you do not doubt.” Then he said to her: “Are you drunk?” She answered: “No.” Then he said: “I remit to you the vision and the punishment of the fearful torments that I had shown you before, tomorrow, and on the sabbath six weeks hence.”
And then he showed her a fiery or flaming wheel turned toward the earth, and so forth as in the second chapter until the end. Afterwards she was brought again before the throne of God, and there she saw judgment and justice, and so forth as above. And she saw many men as if in the divine essence, who had lost the roots of all perfection. And while she stood there, she saw three men in the divine essence falling, as if falling from one degree to another, and they fell entirely, so that she no longer saw in the divine essence anything of them except the bare creation of their being. And in many other ways she saw that many began to fall.
Afterwards he said to her words like those declared to her in the third chapter, namely: “I will separate a people full of iniquity from my perfection and from that which I have given to my chosen sons; and I give it daily, and it is always with me.” And then he showed her the city which he had shown her before in the third chapter. And, sitting on the throne, he showed her how he divided Christendom in its situation as in the third chapter. And those separated from the fourth part began in the divine essence to fall away in diverse ways. And he showed to the aforesaid Mary how he had united the fourth part of Christendom with love to his sons, according to various degrees of perfection.
And to those of the third part he said: “I say to you: accursed of my Father, go into hell which has been prepared for you from the origin of the world until now, where you will suffer horrible torments and the gnashing of teeth.” And you will die by diverse manners of death: some by fire, some by swords thrust through, others by sudden death, and by many other kinds of death you will perish, which I do not now set forth. And he declared to them what were their faults, of which in the third chapter he had made mention, and the explanation of them.
And then he said to her: “Go, I await you above, and receive me. And tell the churches what you have seen. And if the wolves will not hear you, tell it to all. And he who has ears to hear, let him hear, and so forth, until the end of the third chapter.”

In the year 1398, on the 9th day of November, at about the ninth hour, Mary, being in prayer with great bitterness of spirit, was thinking on the state in which we stood, namely that we could not have union and the other perfections necessary for us. And she was rapt by two spirits, fiery or burning. And there was shown to her a very obscure vision, and so obscure that she did not dare to utter even a single word of that vision the whole day, but her soul remained with great fear.
But on the following day, around the sixth hour, God by his power showed to the said Mary the explanation of her vision, saying to her first: “Mary, I will annihilate your soul and afterwards I will create it anew.” And so he did, as the said Mary affirms.
The declaration of the vision was this: she saw first the state of the whole Christian religion, not recognizing any one of them in particular. And she saw the hearts of these [people] in the likeness of houses, inside of which there were idols and images of men, and of iron, gold and silver, and of great animals. And in a certain lowly corner of that religion she saw some men, a wall of men illuminated by the light of the star which she had seen before in another vision. And these men surrounded that star, weeping very bitterly as it seemed to her, pouring forth golden tears.
And beside each of them stood an angel, holding in his hand a vessel like a silver basin gilded with gold; and with great care the angel received all the tears in that basin, and poured them back over their heads. And afterwards he gathered them again, and so he continued without ceasing.
And the Lord who was showing all these things to the said Mary spoke to her, saying: “There are some who have said, and may still say, that visions and revelations are not necessary for them. I declare to them through your mouth that Saint Peter converted many more by a single sermon that he gave than there are faithful in the Christian religion at present. I tell you, they are idolaters. And what you have heard and seen, tell to the masters in theology at the University of Paris.”
And then the said Mary considered whether to tell them by word of mouth or to send it to them in writing. And He replied to her thought: “Send it to them in writing. And convey to them on my part in your writing that if any among them are idolaters, let them destroy their idols, and afterwards they will be sufficient and very powerful to destroy other idols in others; for an idolater cannot be virtuous in destroying any idols unless he first destroys his own. And tell them not to glory in themselves because they make little fruit. And unless they destroy their idols, I will impute their sin to them. And I will give them so many tribulations that in this mortal life they will begin their eternal punishments; and if they rebel against the things I command them through you, they will be rebelling against themselves. And by divine ordinance she saw angels and saints making a certain procession, circling around that tree on every side. And all, as they circled, plucked leaves from that tree and laid them aside, saying: “Some will receive who are in need of them.” And they did not seem content that we do not make a singular feast of our faith. And such a procession they made in honor of the feast of the Catholic faith, because of our failure to make a singular feast of faith. And at that hour Mary heard a secret counsel within the Holy Trinity, saying: “Never will I create a soul that comes to such confusion as will the soul of Antichrist. But we shall infuse it into the body of a boy who will be born of a sinful woman. And he will have all the malice that all the angels of hell possess, and all the evil thoughts and sinful consent by which men are damned.” And Mary, hearing that counsel, thought in her heart: “Lord God, this will be against the general resurrection, in which each soul must rise again with its own body.” And Jesus Christ answered her thought, saying: “It will not be against the resurrection, for that soul will rule two bodies. And they will be alike. And he shall be called the ancient serpent and infernal confusion. And he will punish all who cause ruin. Afterwards our legitimate sons, true confessors who remain, will raise up the Church more than it was raised before the Ascension of Jesus Christ. And we will show them abundantly of our help. Let the wayfarers love what will be more secure for them, whether they themselves restore the Church, or whether their subjects restore it in their default, and we will send our judgment upon the land of religion among those who are called religious; and religion is not in them, except love of us, who although they should keep their religion which they promised us, nevertheless on account of their failure we will send so great a famine on the land, and so great, that neither small nor great will be able to be satisfied. And we will punish the land in such a way that the fruits growing in it will be great. And because of this, let not the usurers rejoice, for such fruits will be useless and will profit no one. And let the princes who have upheld them take good care not to sustain them in such iniquity against our will, for we have sent many tribulations upon the world on account of their sins and because of the failure of religion which is not observed in them. Let the king of France and the other princes take warning of what vengeance they themselves would exact upon those who upheld their enemies; similar will we exact upon them if they uphold them in their iniquities.”
